While a marketing plan is essential for a business to succeed, sometimes the other way around happens. So if its purpose is for the business’ success, why does some marketing plan fail? Here, I’ll give you some reasons why.

1. Having the wrong market. Too often, marketing programs are intended to please its market. However, going back to your product’s positioning, have you considered if it is the right market you are pleasing?We have to put into consideration too that most companies have the tendency to focus on their brand more and its superiority than considering the real needs of their market.
2. Generality. Most marketing strategies fail because it tends to cater to the general masses. While this is good to get more customers, we also have to remember that each customer is different from the other. Catering to more specific niches, will give you a more specific and more effective marketing strategy.
3. Too much for not much. One of the mistakes commonly committed by starting online businessmen is the tendency to do so much with their limited resources. While this is not bad, this however, tends to be unrealistic. Remember, your marketing plan must cohere with what you have, what you can afford, and what you can do for a certain period.
4. Out of sight, out of mind. Most marketing plan fail because businessmen tend to file it away once made. What you don’t see gets off your mind faster than you expect it. The best thing to do is to make a written copy of your goals and the things you want to achieve and post it somewhere you can see it everyday.
5. Budget not goals. Although it is important that you stick to your budget, marketing plan fails when it is driven by budget and not by goals anymore. This not only hinders the success of your business but your ability to dream big and aim high as well.

Although there are hundreds of marketing strategies out there for various businesses, truth of the matter is, only a few is effective for a particular company and its products.
